Why Hungary is the Hidden Gem for Affordable European Degrees

By PEC Admin · May 9, 2026 · 5 min read

Tuition under 5,000 EUR per year, English-taught programmes, and Schengen access. Hungary deserves a closer look from cost-conscious students.

The pitch

Hungary offers some of Europe's lowest tuition fees for international students. Programmes at the University of Debrecen, Budapest Metropolitan, and International Business School (IBS) are all taught in English, and tuition averages 3,000 to 5,000 EUR per year for most undergraduate degrees.

Why it's underrated

  • Schengen access. A Hungarian student visa lets you travel anywhere in Europe.
  • Recognised qualifications. Hungarian degrees are EU-accredited and recognised globally.
  • Stipendium Hungaricum. Fully-funded scholarship for African students, including Uganda, that covers tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend.
  • Lower living costs. Budapest is significantly cheaper than London, Berlin, or Paris.

Our partner institutions

  • University of Debrecen – 80+ English-taught programmes, strong in medicine, engineering, and business.
  • International Business School (IBS), Budapest – Bachelor's, master's, doctorate and language programmes in English, business-focused.
  • Budapest Metropolitan University – Private, accredited, English-medium across creative and business fields.

What to know before you apply

Applications typically open in November for the following September intake. Medicine and dentistry are more competitive (3.5+ GPA, biology entrance exam). Business and humanities are more accessible. Contact PEC for a programme-fit assessment.
