What is a blocked account?
If you're heading to Germany on a student visa, you'll need to prove you have enough funds to support yourself for your first year. The German government requires this proof through a Sperrkonto (blocked account). The funds sit in a German bank and are released to you in monthly instalments once you arrive.
How much do you need?
The amount changes each year. As of the latest update, you need to deposit the equivalent of one year's living expenses (around 11,904 EUR). Contact us for the current figure.
The Expatrio route
PEC partners with Expatrio because they bundle the blocked account with health insurance and a current account in one application, which the German embassy accepts. The process:
- Open the Expatrio account online (15 minutes, in English).
- Transfer the funds from your Ugandan bank to Expatrio.
- Receive the confirmation letter you need for the visa appointment.
- After arrival in Germany, activate the account and start receiving monthly transfers.
Common pitfalls
- Starting too late. Allow 6 to 8 weeks for the funds to clear.
- Wrong account holder name. The name on the blocked account must exactly match your passport.
- Forgetting to include health insurance. Most embassies require proof of insurance valid from day one of arrival.
