Pre-Departure Checklist: 8 Things to Sort Before You Fly

By PEC Admin · April 29, 2026 · 4 min read

The two weeks before your flight are not the time to scramble. Here is the PEC checklist we walk every student through.

Two weeks before departure

  1. Passport and visa. Both originals in your carry-on. Take photocopies; keep one in your checked bag.
  2. Accommodation confirmed. First night at minimum. Long-term housing should be locked in. PEC partners with Canada Homestay Network for Canada-bound students.
  3. Health insurance. Active from day one of arrival. Print the confirmation.
  4. Flight booked. Choose a carrier that allows extra baggage at reasonable rates (Qatar, Emirates, KLM, Lufthansa).
  5. Foreign currency. Carry enough cash for the first 2 to 3 days. Open the destination bank account on arrival; not before.
  6. Mobile plan. Buy a SIM at the airport or activate an eSIM before flying.
  7. Vaccinations. Yellow fever certificate is mandatory for travel from Uganda. Check destination-specific requirements.
  8. Brief your family. Share your itinerary, emergency contacts, and accommodation address.

Day-of-departure

Arrive 3 hours early. Keep visa documents accessible. Drink water. Sleep on the plane if you can.

After arrival

Message PEC the moment you land. Our counsellors stay in touch through your first month to help you settle in.
